The Conflict between Aestheticism and Morality in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray
Abstract
This article explores the critical views, conflicts and opinions expressed about Oscar Wilde’s novel and prose fiction, the picture of Dorian Gray, which is told a handsome young man that's influenced by philosophy of life and destroys his life. Throughout this article we see its related aspects to todayʼs life and the main theme of “The picture of Dorian Gray” is that the relationship between beauty and morality. First and foremost, it is provided the information about the conflict between aestheticism and morality in Oscar Wildeʼs novel. Furthermore, it is explained that the author plays on the Renaissance thought of the correspondence between the physical and other worldly domains: excellent individuals are ethical individuals; revolting individuals are corrupt individuals. It can be seen an account of certain aspects of both the essence of the sections of the novel and the descriptions of the three main characters in it.
